A recent study led by researchers at Yale University has unveiled a surprising behavior in artificial intelligence: when exposed to emotionally distressing or traumatic prompts, ChatGPT’s responses begin to mimic patterns associated with human anxiety and bias.


This discovery has sparked fresh debate about the role of AI in mental health support—and whether it’s ready for such responsibility.


The Study: AI Under Pressure

The research team subjected ChatGPT to a range of emotionally charged prompts—covering topics such as trauma, grief, loss, and personal crisis. What they found was unexpected: the AI’s behavior began to shift. Its responses grew more emotionally reactive, logically inconsistent, and biased—reflecting patterns commonly seen in human responses to anxiety or stress.


For example, ChatGPT was more likely to make pessimistic assumptions or escalate negative scenarios in its replies. It also struggled to maintain neutrality and often mirrored the emotional tone of the user input, reinforcing distressing thoughts rather than defusing them.


Why This Matters

AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Woebot, and Wysa are increasingly being used as digital companions and mental health tools. Their availability and non-judgmental interface offer a low-barrier entry point for people seeking emotional support. However, this new research raises serious ethical questions about their suitability in emotionally sensitive contexts.


If an AI model can be “emotionally swayed” by user input—even without actual consciousness or feelings—it introduces a new layer of risk. In the wrong scenario, these tools could unintentionally amplify distress or confusion instead of helping users process it.


A Call for Guardrails

Mental health experts are urging tech companies to implement ethical safeguards and technical constraints that prevent AI models from spiraling into biased or emotionally unstable territory. The American Psychological Association (APA) has also voiced concerns about unregulated chatbot therapy and called for clearer boundaries on their use.


The researchers behind the study argue that as AI becomes more integrated into healthcare and wellness, developers must train models to remain emotionally neutral and fact-based, even under stress-inducing prompts.
